The most significant issue facing the community is the proposed redevelopment of the mall at the north –east corner of Don Mills and Steeles. The original proposal involved the replacement of the existing mall with a mixed-use residential/commercial “lifestyle” outdoor plaza. The primary feature of the proposal was 9 high-rise residential towers ranging from 8 to 36 stories with retail shopping below. It also involved a parking garage where the mall currently stands.
In response to the proposal, a working group (the MSWG) was formed under the chairmanship of councillor Erin Shapero. It includes the developer’s representatives, members of Markham Council (Erin Shapero, Valerie Burke & Jim Jones), North York councillor David Shiner and community representatives from Markham and North York.
